“Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible.” I love this quote from Tony Robbins. It inspires me to take action and my purpose for this week’s blog is to inspire you to take action too. If you’ve been following this blog over the past months, you’ve already read about big goals that get you out of bed in the morning, smaller goals that get your team on track, and reasons you might struggle to set goals. But maybe you find yourself procrastinating, struggling to take the first steps in creating your plan. If this is the case, read on and let me provide you with some more goal-setting inspiration. I hope these books, blogs, videos, and podcasts help you find the motivation to take action just like they did for me.
Goals vs. Fun
This one by Seth Godin is short and sweet and to the point. It made me take pause because I, personally, am extremely motivated by fun and Seth suggests that not setting goals makes life more fun.
“The thing about goals is that living without them is a lot more fun, in the short run,” he says, but goes on to conclude, “[T]he people who get things done, who lead, who grow and who make an impact… those people have goals.”
But can’t we do both—have fun and set goals? I say yes. Having goals gives us an avenue to take action steps that lead somewhere more specific. Achievement feels really good, but achievement with purpose feels even better.

Inspiration from a Successful Entrepreneur
I listened to this interview between Tim Ferriss and Lulu Lemon founder, Chip Wilson, on a flight between Edmonton and Toronto and vigorously took notes the entire time. I found it to be incredibly motivating. The show notes are loaded with goal-setting resources but if you have time, I highly recommend listening to the entire podcast to learn about Chip’s journey and how he built his empire.
My biggest takeaway after listening this podcast was Chip’s ability to successfully incorporate goal setting (and goal achieving) into his company culture. The way he established the company culture at Lulu Lemon to encourages every one of his teams to dream big and support each other is very motivating. It’s something I work hard to bring into the team culture at Fesyk Marketing too.
This podcast also helped me feel more confident in sharing my goals with others which was an important step in my personal development.

A Goal-Setting Framework
Back in the early 2000’s I worked for a nonprofit called The Role Model Program. We taught kids about self-discovery and goal setting. The program created a workbook called Dare to Dream which contained exercises to help kids begin to think about their future and to identify opportunities to help them set and achieve their goals. The Role Model Program mantra was “A dream is just a dream until you write it down, then it becomes a plan.”
Maybe what’s holding you back is that you need a framework to help you get started. Check out this free worksheet we developed that was inspired by The Role Model Program. It will help you come up with some good short-term goals to help you achieve your big one.

Help to Create Smaller, More Measurable Goals
Some people get blocked because they don’t have examples of what a goal looks like. I think I fall into this category sometimes. BHAG (big) goals come easy to me, but the small, more measurable goals to help me achieve the big goals don’t always flow naturally. We talked about OKR’s last month. This goal setting and achieving method inspires me and I often look to examples from the Measure what Matters website for inspiration.

Use Meditation in Your Goal-Setting Process
I truly believe that mindset is the single most important factor when it comes to success. And I don’t know about you, but sometimes what stops me from achieving my goals is that I can’t figure out how to carve out the time in my busy schedule to just stop, think and consider what I should actually be working toward.
To solve this problem I turn to guided meditation. A search for “goal setting/achieving meditation” on YouTube or a free app like Insight Timer will give you a long list of options. Here are a few tools I use to help me set goals and stay motiviated.
