How Instagram Live’s newest features can strengthen your marketing

We’re back with another social media experiment! Last week our team tested out Clubhouse to try out this latest tool for relationship building. This week we hopped on a live stream of our own to test the new Instagram Live features, and to share our thoughts on how to use Instagram Live to build relationships.

Now, we’re no newbies when it comes to Instagram Live. We suggest this platform for several of our clients, and we’ve seen major success with weekly live shows like The Art of Renovation LIVE. An active presence on Instagram can help make your business soar. But we want to dive deeper into why Instagram Live could be the best place for you to connect with your audience (or why not).

What we love about Instagram Live

Facebook, YouTube, Twitch, Clubhouse … There are a ton of live stream platforms out there, but none quite like Instagram. Instagram Live has features that mimic real, in-person connection in so many different ways, taps into your existing Instagram audience, and is an easy way to create content that can live on your page long-term.

If you’re an Instagram user, you’ve likely tuned in to a Live stream at least once, but did you notice all the ways you can interact? You can send a message in the chat, read and respond to everyone else’s messages, ask a question, or request to join the live stream. 

When you’re hosting a live stream, you can pull up questions from your stories or stream, bring up photos from your camera roll, or invite multiple guests to join you for a group conversation. Plus, once the stream is done, you can save your live streams to your IGTV channel where your followers can catch up on the amazing content you’ve just created.

While the multiple guest function is such a great bonus, it creates a bit of trouble for hosts who want to share images during their live. If you have a super visual brand and want to include images as part of your live stream, it might not be possible if you have more than one guest.

So, is Instagram Live a good tool for your business?

If you want to establish (virtual) face-to-face connections, and potentially create evergreen content, Instagram Live could be the perfect tool for you. If interviews and potential conversations with guests interest you, Instagram Live is the perfect place to have these types of conversations. Keep in mind that live streams tend to be longer (anywhere from fifteen minutes to an hour) and the number of viewers might not be high for the entire duration. And as we know, Instagram loves any content that keeps users on the platform for a long period of time, so the longer you keep them engaged, the more love the algorithm will show your content.

Maybe you enjoy more of a casual, 10-15 minute chat, and you’re not interested in sharing or repurposing the recording. Or, maybe you’re just not comfortable putting your face on the screen. A platform where you don’t have to worry about video or auto-saved recording might be better for you. Perfect example? Clubhouse!
