Hello everyone! My name is Dylan. I’m Fesyk Marketing’s Intern for the summer and want to announce something we’ve been working on to help local businesses. We are currently creating a streamlined, easy-to-access marketing plan audit worksheet that you can download for free to get your strategic marketing plans and campaigns dialled in on the right audience.

Why?

After looking over past social media assessments, we found that small, essential things would sometimes go unnoticed, even under the most critical eye. As a small business owner, it’s hard to keep track of all of the details of every social media platform you might have a presence on, which can harm your social media plans moving forward. We know that no plan or company is the same. Although it might seem like a good idea to develop a different approach for each campaign plan and marketing audit, it’s good to have a consistent plan that can cover everything to make sure nothing goes unchecked.

Checking Consistency

This download ensures your social media analysis is consistent and accurate.

When we audit social media campaigns for clients, one common problem we notice is inconsistency. Your website might have an up-to-date logo, but the Twitter account you forgot you had has an old one. Your old website may not redirect potential customers to your updated website. Unless you notice you have a sizeable following and decide it’s a great place to build relationships with the kind of customers you want to work with, it might be time to delete some of those inactive social profiles you no longer use. To make these kinds of decisions and track down all the inconsistencies in your online presence, check in on the past areas where your business has been active online.

Because every community, every plan, every business, and every person is unique, this worksheet is easy to digest, informative, and logical. It walks you through some important social media planning components to assess what works and what needs attention. You might even learn something new about yourself and your business along the way!

Don’t worry; you don’t need experience in marketing, business, or communications to grasp where you need to go with your marketing plan. This download will help steer you in the right direction.

Sneak Preview: Using the Worksheet to Analyze Your Brand’s Identity

Are you interested? Well, I’ll go into one of my favourite components of the worksheet. Think of it as a teaser for what kind of results you can expect. This component is known as “Analyzing your current brand’s identity”!

Simply put, your brand identity is how you portray your business to the public. If you want to build a meaningful relationship with your customers, you have to wear the proper attire to fit the right occasion. If you wanted people to donate to a fundraiser, you wouldn’t wear a tie-dye shirt to a black-tie event. It’s important to look at how you previously represented your organization and how that presentation may have benefitted or even harmed your image. Analyzing your brand identity may start with answering the simple question: “What makes you special?”

You probably asked yourself this before, but coming back to it can help shine a light on some of your future marketing strategies. Your business plan may have changed since you last plotted your entrepreneurial approach, so if you take the time to find that angle that nobody else has (again), you immediately become the go-to business for that service. Boom!— There’s a marketing plan right there.

Sneak Preview: Use the Worksheet to Reassess Your Logo and Business Name

Another practical question for assessing your brand identity is taking five seconds and looking at your company’s logo and name. What immediate reactions, thoughts or assumptions can you make about your company in the first five seconds? The biggest hurdle with this might be your own positive bias towards your company– not that there’s anything wrong with that!
However, if this is the case, get a friend’s opinion and see what they think! It helps to get as many opinions on this as you can, so try reaching out to specific customers you’re trying to attract and get their feedback.

This worksheet is filled with easy questions like the ones above.

Completing it and working your way through this worksheet will give you a good idea of where you need to take your new social media marketing plan to build some mutually beneficial customer relationships.

Today we welcome Dr. Rosie Kuhn to the Fesyk Marketing blog! As a transformational life and business coach (and author!), she has great advice about setting goals, and why goal setting is so hard. She has some great tips to overcome the obstacles we place along the path to setting and achieving goals. Read on for her tips!

Why is Goal Setting So Hard?

At a minimum, 90% of the individuals who come to me for business coaching find themselves at a standstill. They have specific objectives and goals they want to achieve, however, they just can’t seem to make them happen. They can’t seem to get out of their own way!

In the initial session, business owners and wannabe entrepreneurs come in frustrated and disappointed. They will list off the timeline for their goals, and complain that they just aren’t able to make things happen.

After hearing the list, I ask a question—it’s actually THE QUESTION! “What is your intention for fulfilling these objectives and goals? Quite often the individual will look at me as if I’m an idiot. “What do you mean, what is my intention—my intention is to be successful in my business and make money!”

I will then again ask the question—What is your intention?—this time in relation to being successful and making money. At this point, people are questioning if they just wasted their hard-earned money on this crazy lady asking questions to which the answers should be obvious.

For over 20 years, I’ve worked as a Transformational Life and Business Coach. And consistently, every single client struggles to achieve their goals and objectives when they are:

unclear about the intention of those goals and objectives,

unaware of conflicting commitments that undermine their progress,

unwilling to change and grow for the sake of their business, and unwilling to let go of what doesn’t work and what they are afraid to lose.

A. Unclear Intentions

Without strong and clear intentions, your business will remain on shaky ground. You will doubt yourself and your capacity to fulfill your heart’s desire. You will look at what others are doing. You’ll question the worthiness of your endeavours. And, you will compare yourself and your business with others out there. This creates more unsureness, stress and overwhelm. This isn’t a fun way to be in business!

As a practice, write down all of your intentions for your business, for each goal and for each objective. In essence, you are creating a vision for your company. For example, “The intention of my business is to bring beauty into the world. The goal is to cultivate awareness of the importance of my product and service. My heart’s desire is to make the world a better place.”

When I do this with clients, their hearts begin to remember the inspiration for doing what they want to do. They are enlivened, and fun returns to the process of growing their business and their dreams.

B. Conflicting Commitments

When you are as committed to not failing as you are to being successful, your business will go NOWHERE.

Most of us are unaware of the conversations that are ongoingly occurring in our brains. And, these conversations are the obstacles to the success and fulfillment we are wanting to achieve. When we aren’t aware of conflicting commitments we are unaware of the influences they have on our momentum.

Every “yes but, if only, and what if, creates hesitation. They question your resolve, your abilities, and your capacity to bring your A-Game to the world. Each and every one of us has to personally train ourselves to notice these conversations that are not in alignment with our goals and objective.

As a practice, write down your “Yes, Buts,” “If Only’s,” and “What Ifs.” List ALL of your fears. For example, “I want to be successful in my business, but what if it takes time away from my family? What if to become successful I will have less time with my family? What if I’ll be stressed and overwhelmed? I’ll have to be more organized and I hate being organized. If only I didn’t have to do the stuff I hate doing!!”

This practice allows you to see where you are not in alignment with your Intentions, your goals or objectives. Truth is, each of us has to make peace with the part of us who isn’t on board with what we say we want—our spoken commitment. The clearer we become regarding conflicting commitments the more we are at choice to do something with them.

C. Unwilling to Change:

As we grow our business our business will grow us.

Most of us who have an intention to grow our businesses look for tried and true methods of doing that. Tried and true, in essence, means there are no risks—it’s foolproof and fail-safe! But the truth is, the underlying phenomenon that occurs is: as you grow your business you grow yourself. Without personal growth, your capacity to lead, make decisions, overcome stress and overwhelm, won’t allow you to grow your company to the next level. Each and every one of us has to expand the edges of our comfort zone to allow for greater degrees of comfort in making those choices that will grow us and our business.

As a practice, reread your list of “Yes, Buts,” “If Only’s,” and “What Ifs.” Notice the voice inside your head that says, “I DON’T WANT TO CHANGE!!! I DON’T WANT TO WORK THAT HARD!!!” Notice emotions, fears, worries and overwhelm that begin to form. YUCK!!!

This is known as “The Big Fat Be-With.” To bring success to your business and to your life, you need to be with what isn’t working and what needs to change. This takes courage and strength. You and billions of people all have to participate in “The Big Fat Be-With.” No one is exonerated from this process. You are not alone!

Work With a Thinking Partner or Business Coach to Empower You To Create Your Unique Recipe for Success

Every successful entrepreneur will share with you their specific recipe for success. That means there are thousands of recipes for success out there. How do you choose which recipe to use for your specific intentions? You have to be willing to trust and respect your visions, your intentions, your goals and objectives. You have a “knowing” stronger than anything you’ve yet experienced. Trust that knowing.

If that knowing isn’t yet strong enough, you will be challenged to overcome obstacles to fulfilling your goals and objectives. That means growing yourself up, or leveling up your capacity to be who you need to be in order to do what you need to do. Research and find a business coach that will support and empower you through this process.

Research and Find the Marketing Company that Listens to Who You Are

Just like hiring a business coach, you want a marketing company that understands that each and every business is unique, and is built upon very individual and precious intentions. Your relationship with your business is something to be nurtured and nourished. By working with the marketing consultant that understands these important relationships, you’ll be able to strengthen your capacity to believe in your vision, trust your knowing, love your vision and know that when you are stuck it’s because you haven’t yet come to that point of letting go of what doesn’t work and what you are afraid to lose.

One Last Tip!

You and your business deserve all the love and support you are willing to receive. Successful businesses and entrepreneurs are willing to do whatever it takes to build their dreams into their fullest expression. Hire the best supports possible. They will grow your capacity for confidence in yourself and in your business.

There you have it—some reasons goal setting is so hard, and some tips to confront this and make goal setting easier!

~~

Key Takeaway:

Goal setting is hard because we’re unclear about our objectives, unaware of our conflicting commitments, and unwilling to change! By being clear with yourself about what inspires you, by facing the “yes, buts” in your life, and by being willing to make hard changes, you can begin to make goal setting much easier.

Hi! I’m Kelsie, Fesyk Marketing’s Social Media Specialist, and I’m excited to share all about my new favourite tool to boost your Instagram reach, showcase your product or personality, and connect with your audience in a whole new way.

Yep, I’m talking about Instagram Reels!

What are Instagram Reels?

If you’ve ever fallen into the black hole of scrolling through TikTok for hours, Instagram Reels will make you feel right at home. Instagram Reels are short videos, 60 seconds or less, often set to a song or a sound created by other users.

You may be familiar with Instagram’s other tools like Stories, IGTV, and your Feed posts. What sets Reels apart is that they allow users to stitch together multiple video clips into one content piece within the app. Plus, you can use effects like filters, music and other sounds, or changing the video speed. Before Reels, the only way to create such a video would be with a tool like iMovie (which takes a fair bit of video-editing knowledge).

Unlike Stories that disappear after 24 hours, Reels live forever in the Reels tab of your profile. And while IGTV is ideal for long-form video or an episodic series, Reels are limited to a maximum of 60 seconds.

What makes Instagram Reels so great?

What really pushes Reels over and above other existing tools, is that your content is promoted to users across the entire platform through the Explore Feed, instead of just to your followers or to people following the hashtags you used. Rumour has it that Instagram’s algorithm gives priority to creators who use Reels as an incentive to get more people creating with the tool. I’ve heard anecdotes from my social media marketing colleagues reporting more than 200% increases in their analytics after incorporating Reels into their strategy. That’s huge!

Despite TikTok’s popularity, Instagram still has nearly twice as many users as TikTok. Now that many users repost TikToks to Instagram Reels, Instagram users are more likely to stay and scroll through Reels, rather than going to a different app. That means more opportunities for users to stumble across your content and decide to engage, follow, or buy from you.

Another benefit of Reels is that the time investment for the user is low, so it’s more likely that they will stick around to watch your full 15-60 second clip than they might be if your video was 5 minutes or more. Attention spans are getting shorter, and if you can grab your audience in the first few seconds of your Reel, they’re more likely to watch the full video, and check out the rest of your content while they’re at it.

Finally, one of the best things about Reels is that they are low-risk. Users aren’t looking for totally polished, high production quality videos on Reels. The more authentic your video, the better it will perform, so have fun and lean into it.

Are reels right for your business?

As always, before you jump into a new tool, the first question you should ask yourself is: is the audience I’m trying to reach using this platform? (If you’re not sure, check out this blog post about deciding which platforms you should be using for your business!)

If your business is geared toward a younger Gen Z audience, you may be better off taking the leap into TikTok, where the largest percentage of users is between ages 10-19 (25%) and nearly half are under 30. But if you’re marketing towards Millennials, you may have better luck on Instagram where the demographic trends slightly older (62% of users are aged 18-34).

Another thing to consider when it comes to creating Reels is how comfortable you are with the Instagram platform, and video editing in general. While the method of creating a new Reel can be pretty intuitive once you get into it, there is a bit of a learning curve. It’s not uncommon to end up spending upwards of an hour tweaking and fine-tuning, all for a 15-second video. If you’re not familiar with the app, spend some time playing around, testing the tools and figuring out how it works before you dive into a strategy of posting multiple Reels per month.

Okay … I’m ready! How do I use Instagram Reels?

The technical steps to making a Reel are pretty straightforward — check out this blog from Later for a step-by-step explanation.

Now, the concept and planning of a good Reel is where it takes a bit of finesse.

First, think of the overall goal of your Reel. Are you hoping to showcase a product? Share your expertise through advice? Show off your personality by jumping on a current trend? Deciding what you want your Reel to accomplish is step one.

If you’re feeling stuck, scroll through the Reels tab on Instagram and look for inspiration. This is a channel where putting your own personal twist onto an existing video style or topic is not only acceptable, but encouraged. Take note of the Reels that draw you in, that make you want to watch the whole way through, that make you feel entertained or interested. Then, think of how you could do something similar, but tailored to your business and your audience.

(Looking for some insider tips? Check out this post from Instagram where they share do’s and don’ts for creating Reels that will do well in the algorithm.)

Next, you want to get an idea of what shots your Reel will include. Trust me on this one — you want to have a storyboard or outline of the video BEFORE you start to film. Jot down some short, point-form notes of what shots you want to take.

Then, film! You can film your Reel directly in the app, or film clips using your phone’s camera and stitch them together in Instagram after the fact. Be sure to film with your phone vertical (portrait mode), and in a well-lit area so the video looks good.

When you have all your video pieces, you can use the Reels editor to tweak or trim the clips, add sound, stickers, text, and effects until you’re happy with the final video. One thing to consider is if you are using any voice-over or if you are talking during the video, adding captions to the Reel is a great way to increase the accessibility of your video, and make users browsing without sound on more likely to stay and watch.

Then… it’s time to hit post! Pro tip: be sure to share the Reel to your stories to boost it’s reach even more.

Have fun with it!

Instagram Reels may feel daunting at first, but once you dip your toes in, you’ll love this new way of connecting with your audience. If you’re feeling nervous to take the plunge, get in touch with us and we can help!

If you’ve clicked on our blog before, you know how much we love content marketing. Creating good content is one of the best ways to connect with your audience, but only if your content is in the right space(s). There’s a lot that goes into choosing the right type of content for your business (if you missed our past blog on this, click here to read it). Above all, you need to feel fulfilled in your content creation.

We invited Dr. Rosie Kuhn, Transformational Coach and Author of over 13 personal-development books, to share her words of wisdom on the world of podcasting! Our team has worked with Dr. Rosie over the past year to help guide her podcast creation and share it with her audience, creating a loyal fan base.

If you’re thinking about starting a podcast for your business, get your notebook out for these starter tips.

Take it away, Dr. Rosie!

Dr. Rosie Kuhn’s podcast creation journey

If you search Google for the pros and cons of podcasting, you will get a lot of really great information. In my research for this blog I found out that over 21 million hours of podcasts are listened to every day. There are a lot of great opportunities to be found and heard through podcasts. So what makes it a great platform for me?

I’ve written 13 books and over 250 blogs. I’ve recorded almost 300 YouTube videos. So, when I began to think about all the places people listen to podcasts (while they drive, workout, wait for their kids) I thought this platform might be the ticket for sharing some wisdom, experiences and discoveries. As a transformational coach, and a woman old enough to be someone’s grandmother, I figured I would explore podcasts to connect with people who may not be into watching videos on YouTube or reading blogs on a website.

There are so many articles online that will give you a list of pros and cons if you’re thinking of starting a podcast – you don’t need to see one more. So instead, I want to share my podcast creation journey with you. What I love about it, what I don’t love about it, how I created content, and what I wish I knew before I started. All in all, podcast creation has been a positive experience for me – an experience I look forward to repeating again!

Why I love the world of podcasting

Because of my nature to go with the flow, and to listen and allow my intuition to guide me, I found my time recording to be a good practice. Here’s why I love podcast creation:

It comes easy to me. I love to spend my time creating great content. I easily recorded 100 episodes for my first show, Aging Like a Guru, and then another 100 episodes for Spiritual Immersion: Taking the Plunge. I released three episodes a week that were rarely longer than 15 minutes. My intuition is the source of my content: the more I listen, the more I can create!

Sharing my voice and my style creates easy communication. Podcasting feels personable. I imagine my audience taking in every word and applying them to their own personal experiences. I love sharing aspects of my topics that create resonance, and evoke personal truths for the listener. Perhaps this happens more so than in video or blogs.

There are so many places to host a podcast today. Instead of just iTunes we now have platforms like PodBean, Pandora, Alexa, Amazon, and so many others! It’s easy to be heard, and I love that.

I enjoyed the research that went into creating a good podcast. I purchased a good pair of headphones, a quality microphone, and each cost about $100. I used Garageband to record and edit my episodes, and I bought a piece of music for $25 from Pond 5. I pay PodBean to host my two podcasts, and I’ve gotten a good number of downloads. Buy quality products, but not one’s that break your bank!

Initially someone did the back end of PodBean for me but the truth is, I could have easily done it myself! So, that’s what I did for my second podcast show. There are so many YouTube videos that walk you through the process, like this one. That being said, there was a value in paying someone to work on this for me because it motivated me to create a schedule and stick to it.

What I wish I knew before starting my podcast

There are some aspects to podcast creation that are less positive, of course. Here are a few things to consider before you jump in with both feet:

As I mentioned, I have a desire to connect and engage. Though I feel podcasting is a personable experience, this may not be the case for everyone. I’m talking as if my audience is engaged and responding, but really, it is only me behind the microphone. The lack of direct interaction can have some effects on your confidence.

Podcasts are time consuming: creating an outline, researching and writing the content, recording and editing. My approach is to be natural, approachable, and casual because my topics can be quite intense. Many hosts spend hours perfectly recording each session and then editing it exactly how they want. I did a minimal amount of that. I also recorded three episodes in one sitting. This kept things organized and it was simple for me to upload them all at the same time.

Self-organization and motivation are essential to creating podcasts for any period of time. These self-disciplinary skills may not be true for you. If this isn’t fun for you, you may find it hard to sustain the practice of podcast creation. There may be other ways to get your message out there! Keep an open mind and you will find the perfect match for you.

Tips for your podcast … if you choose to create one!

Podcasting really can be the most amazing journey for both you and your audience! So, if you feel inspired to take the leap, take a few of these tips with you.

Do what you love, talk about what you love, and be passionate about sharing your message with others. If you aren’t excited about what you’re saying, your message will be cloudy.

Allow your natural, authentic presence to be. When you try to be perfect without mistakes you lose the connection you want to build with your audience. You don’t have to be an expert or have a level of mastery. You just have to have the intention to express yourself, your heart and passion.

If you are doing it for the money – think again. Yes, there are people who are hugely successful. And yes, there is money to be made. However, as I share with anyone and everyone who asks me what they should do, I say “Do what makes you happy.”

Find equipment that you are comfortable and confident with. I found I have confidence in Garageband. It’s easy and inexpensive – and it’s free on Apple products! There are a lot of options out there, so experiment with different applications.

If you decide to take on podcasting, see it as an experiment. Experiment with your style. Find your voice and discover how podcasting can be your vehicle for expression.

On an even deeper note, the final piece of advice I will share with you is my calling to begin a third podcast called Diving Within for Spiritual Peace. Though it is ready to go, some part of me has been hesitant to start recording. I listen for when that voice within me is all in. Sometimes it is. Sometimes it’s not. For me, if it isn’t a hell yes, it’s probably a hell no!

I encourage patience, patience, patience! Reaching the number of ears you want may not happen overnight. Trust in your heart. Trust in your message. Trust that you will connect to those who are waiting to hear you.
