Business Blogging 101: What you need to know before starting a blog for your business

Starting a blog for your business

So you’re thinking about starting a blog for your business. Snappy headlines catch your eye, and when you see new on the blog in a social caption you immediately click to read. You read stats like “70% of consumers learn about a company through articles” and you wonder: “Is a blog right for my business?”

For some, starting a blog is a no brainer. It’s the perfect place to share what’s happening with you and your business. But maybe you’re on the fence about whether it’s the right type of content for you.

Let’s start by stating this (perhaps unknown) fact: any business can benefit from a blog on their website. Aside from the obvious blog-worthy industries like fashion, food and health we’ve helped several clients from a wide variety of professions start successful blogs. Real estate, home renovations, retail, therapy and automotive.

You name it, we can find a way for you to build relationships with your audience through a really great blog.

But it’s not as easy as choosing a fun template for your website and writing some words on the page.

There’s a lot that goes into starting a blog, and maintaining it to be successful is a skill. When done right, your blog can do a lot of great things for your business. Here are our pros and cons that will help you get more clear about whether a blog is right for you.

Pros of starting a blog

  1.  It’s a great way to share your expertise and increase your brand awareness. A well-written blog can feel like a conversation with your audience.
  2. You’ll gain search engine optimization (SEO) rankings on Google, which means your customers will find you faster.
  3. You can give your audience a gateway to your other content, products or services with back links.
  4. You will learn about your audience and gain clarity on your message and the services you provide.

Cons of starting a blog

  1.  It’s time consuming. Consistency is a must with every blog.
  2. You have to regularly come up with content to share, even when you feel like you have none.
  3. You need to get eyes on the page. If people don’t land on your blog your efforts will go unnoticed.

Tips for your blog

Now don’t let our cons scare you. If you’re determined to start a blog for your business, you can avoid frustration and writer’s block with a good content plan and editorial calendar. We plan our blog content 6 months ahead of time so we have a clear vision of the topics we want to share and when they will be published.

Pro tip: your blog doesn’t have to be long every time. While a longer blog is better for SEO, consistency over time is more important. We love Seth Godin’s marketing blog. His content varies in length from 30 words to 1000 words, depending on the day.

Once you get past the content creation process you need to get traffic to your blog. The best way for people to find your content is to share it out.

Share each new post on your social pages, tag people in the comments, and send the live link to your friends.
